My Best Friend.

My Best Friend…Sitting in my rocking chair (my prayer closet), I closed my quiet time by singing the song, “As the Deer.” A nagging doubt punctuated the end of my song. I’d been feeling lonely that night in a new state, new town, new job, and new church. I need friends, Lord, I pleaded. Then, with spiritual ears I heard Him say, “Not until you discover I am the Friend you need. Lately, you’ve been ‘longing’ for others. Let me be your source of companionship.” I’ve clung to that memory: God’s voice so clear and my transgression so real. Often, I’ve looked for others to occupy the voids in my life, yet God has been the only One who filled the empty space in my heart. It’s been said, “When God is all you have, He is all you need.” God placed this commandment first because He knows us best. Other “gods” will simply never meet our deepest needs nor give us eternal joy. I found lasting friends in that new location, but my best Friend has followed me to two more states. Good thing He always knows my address. — Open Windows devotion
